A 13-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a grit lorry in Caerphilly on Thursday morning, Gwent Police has confirmed.

The driver of the grit lorry, a 36-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention. He remains in police custody.

Gwent Police closed the Lansbury Park Distributor Road between Bedwas Bridge roundabout and the turn-in into Rudry, with diversions in place.

At around 1pm, a member of Gwent Police’s collision unit told Caerphilly Observer the road will be closed “for a while,” with the investigation at the scene ongoing.

Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Wales Air Ambulance attended the scene.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today shortly before 8.15am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and vehicle on Lansbury Park Distributor Road.

“We sent one rapid response vehicle and one emergency ambulance to the scene, where we were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service.

“One person was taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for further treatment.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council leader Sean Morgan said: “Our thoughts are with the young person and his family and we wish him a swift and full recovery.

“As this matter is subject to a police investigation, it would not be appropriate for us to comment on the circumstances surrounding the accident at this stage.”

Gwent Police is appealing for witnesses, or motorists with dashcam footage from the road between 8am and 8.30am, to come forward.

Gwent Police can be contacted on 101 or through direct message on Facebook and Twitter, quoting reference 2300076857. Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
