Bedwas-based Peter’s Pies has paid tribute to Peter Thomas – whose family founded the company – following his death aged 79.
Originally called Thomas’ Pies, by Peter’s father Stan Thomas, the family business changed its name to Peter’s Pies by 1970, when the company moved from its then base in Merthyr to Bedwas.
Mike Grimwood, managing director of Peter’s Food Service, said: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Thomas today.
“Peter was a humble gentleman, who with his brother Stan, built upon his father’s vision and enthusiasm for the business, developing the highly successful Peter’s company we see today.
“He never lost his connection to Peter’s and despite his success after leaving the business, he would regularly keep in touch to see how things were and sharing in our successes, such as our recent 50th anniversary.
“He will be greatly missed by all of us.”
Mr Thomas played for Cardiff RFC in the 1960s and later became chairman at Cardiff Blues, which has since been rebranded as Cardiff Rugby – a role he held until 2018.
He became life president of Cardiff Rugby upon his retirement.
Cardiff Rugby said: “From his playing days to his unwavering and steadfast leadership, business acumen and financial support as a director and benefactor, Mr Thomas will be remembered as one of the most important and influential figures in the unrivalled history of Cardiff Rugby.”
The club also confirmed that Mr Thomas passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday March 29 with his family by his side.
Mr Thomas was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021.
