The Welsh Government has said it “stands ready” to offer support after 100 jobs were put at risk in Pontllanfraith.
Printing company Pensord Press, which has been based in the town for more than 50 years, announced this month it will be closing its site on Tram Road.
Plaid Cymru Senedd Member Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents the South Wales East region, described the announcement as a “devastating blow” for the area.
In a letter to Welsh Government Economy Minister Vaughan Gething, Mr Owen Griffiths said: “The company claims that some staff have been offered alternative roles at their factory in Merthyr but this statement has been questioned by employees.

“Speaking on behalf of the town, I would be grateful if all avenues could be explored to try and save 100 jobs that we can ill afford to lose from this part of my region.”
Mr Owen Griffiths also asked if the firm’s new owners, Stephens and George Print Group, had approached the Welsh Government for financial support prior to its decision to close the site.
However, a Welsh Government spokesperson told Caerphilly Observer that “no direct request for financial support” had been made.
The spokesperson added: “The Welsh Government, in partnership with key stakeholders, stands ready to employ a multi-agency response which will help ensure all affected employees are provided with the information, advice and guidance they need to secure new employment.
“Our ReAct+ Programme provides a vocational training grant of up to £1,500 to help people gain the new skills they need to find employment, as well as help with training-related expenses such as travel and care costs.
“The programme can also provide a Personal Development Support grant of up to £500 to help remove barriers to employment.”
Pensord Press and Stephens and George Print Group have both been contacted for comment.
