This year will once again see a scaled-down festival for Caerphilly town, council organisers have announced.

Dubbed the Little Cheese, in contrast to previous years’ Big Cheese, the smaller event was first held last year, without a funfair, after development work at Caerphilly Castle prevented the fuller version from being held.

However, Caerphilly County Borough Council said that following public feedback it has decided to hold the Little Cheese again on the weekend of Saturday September 2 and Sunday September 3.

It has previously reported that last year’s event attracted 10,000 visitors.

In a Facebook post it said: “[The] events team are excited to be investigating a medium-sized funfair at this year’s event as well as re-enactment displays in Dafydd Williams Park. Discussions are currently taking place with Cadw and various funfair operators to see if they can make this happen.

“The main stage will take place in the Twyn Car Park again this year, as well as lots of fantastic food and craft stalls and music areas throughout the town.

“Feedback last year from retailers and residents was in support of the event being held in the town centre, as it helps support local businesses whilst directly increasing town centre footfall.”

Responding to a question from a Facebook user if the Big Cheese would ever be held again, deputy council leader Jamie Pritchard admitted: “We’ve tried to respond proportionately to all the feedback and we will review the comments after this year’s event before coming to an agreement for 2024.”
