Sport Wales has made available £1m of funding

Sports clubs can apply for up to £25,000 towards the cost of solar panels or better insulation to help save energy.

The funding, from Sport Wales, is aimed at helping clubs become more energy efficient, saving money in the long-term.

What is Sport Wales?

Sport Wales is the national organisation responsible for developing sport in Wales. It receives public funding but is independent of the Welsh Government, which it advises on sporting matters.

Sport Wales CEO Brian Davies said: “We want to help support strong sustainable clubs so that they can continue to benefit the communities they serve by providing affordable activities.

“Sports clubs that run premises continue to feel the effects of the cost-of-living crisis, so we’re really pleased to be able to support their ideas for reducing their energy consumption which could save them significant amounts of money in both the short and long-term.”

The grants can also be used to install energy-efficient LED lighting and motion sensors, as well as improving heating systems.

Mr Davies added: “We have a total pot of funding worth £1m for these grants and are confident that the return on investment will be several times that amount in terms of financial savings for clubs.”

To be eligible to apply, clubs must either own their building or have at least a ten-year lease.

The clubs are also expected to contribute a minimum of 20% towards their total project costs.

Clubs wishing to apply need to complete a Stage 1 application form between Tuesday May 16 and Wednesday June 28.

The application can be done online through Sport Wales’ website.
