More than £58m of Welsh Government money will be invested in active travel schemes across Wales.

Active travel includes walking and cycling instead of using cars and other public transport.

The funding will go towards creating 37 new active travel routes, as well as the redevelopment of a further 22.

It will also be used to fund 30 local authority schemes, with each of Wales’ local authorities receiving a minimum of £500,000. This can be used for future scheme developments and minor works such as new crossing points, promotional work and new cycle parking.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is receiving £834,000 in 2023/24.

Making the announcement on Thursday June 15, Welsh Government deputy minister Lee Waters, who has responsibility for transport, said: “Walking and cycling provides a practical and vital response to help Wales meet its environmental and health targets.

“The Active Travel (Wales) Act puts pressure on us to deliver on high-quality active travel networks that encourage more and more people to regularly walk and cycle for journeys instead of using a car.

“Today’s funding is another substantial investment that will help us deliver ambitious plans across Wales that have all been designed to connect people with where they love and where they need to go.”

The funding has been welcomed by Hefin David, the Labour Senedd Member for Caerphilly.

Dr David said: “This is a great move by Welsh Government and so very important not only to improve our air quality locally, but in the wider plan for Wales to reach net zero by 2050.

“This increased funding will see £834,000 allocated to Caerphilly Council, to develop new active travel routes locally and encourage greener ways of travel across the Borough.”
