After three dog attacks in Penyrheol alone in the last two years, Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn
Community Council has organised an event to help dog owners better care for their dogs.
The event will be held at Penyrheol Park on Saturday July 1, from 10am until 2pm. There will be several organisations there, offering guidance relating to dog welfare, behaviour, training, and how someone can report concerns.
Penyrheol councillor Steve Skivens said: “The area has unfortunately had a number of dog related issues.
Some with catastrophic outcomes that are of great concern to many in the community.
“We can’t turn the clock back and my heart felt sympathies go out to all still suffering. What we can do is appeal to dog owners and those wishing to own a dog in future to talk to professionals and get good advice, help, or support.
“We have a number of dog clubs, dog trainers, vets and dog charities who are working closely with us on this local initiative.”
In April this year, a five-month-old baby was taken to hospital after being attacked by a dog.
Emma Whitfield, mother to ten-year-old Jack Lis, who tragically lost his life in a dog attack in November 2021, added: “I hope that with this community initiative people can gather some advice for where they can receive help for all aspects when it comes to dogs, whether it’s their own or others.
“Anything that may prevent further incidents has to be tried. It’s a positive step that needs to be taken.”
