The Macmillan Caerphilly Fundraising Committee raised more than £500,000

A Caerphilly-based fundraising committee is hanging up their collection tins after operating for 37 years and raising more than half a million pounds.

The Macmillan Caerphilly Fundraising Committee was established in 1986 and has since raised funds through numerous coffee mornings, dinners, carol concerts and collections.

In addition to building strong relationships with local businesses, the committee successfully raised funds to directly contribute to the construction of the Macmillan Chemotherapy Unit at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, which opened in 2011.

Speaking about the decision to close the fundraising group, Christine Davies, Chair of the Macmillan Caerphilly Fundraising Committee, said: “We, as a committee, want to say thank you to the local community for supporting our efforts to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support, from supermarket collections to donations, to attending our events.

“We’ve had a great time as a group raising money across the county to help Macmillan continue to support people living with cancer.  We are so proud of our achievements over this time, and I wanted to also thank every committee member and volunteer who has helped to make this a success.”

Speaking about the impact of the fundraising group, Richard Pugh, Macmillan’s head of partnerships in Wales, said: “We have been so lucky to have such a dedicated and successful fundraising committee in Caerphilly for all this time.

“Committee members should be very proud of the impact that their fundraising has made. It’s made a real difference to the lives of local people who receive the devastating news of a cancer diagnosis.

“We shall miss them but fully understand the members’ decision to close their committee and wish every member all the very best.”
