A dispersal order has been put in place in Blackwood in attempt to curb antisocial behaviour.

The order, enforced by Gwent Police, came into effect at 2pm on Wednesday August 23 and will be in place until 2pm on Friday August 25.

The dispersal area covers the town centre and nearby residential streets, including sections of the B4251, Sunnybank Road, Cefn Road, Bryn Road, Highfields Way and the surrounding roads.

Police will have the power to stop people from entering these areas between this time if they believe they have engaged or will engage in antisocial behaviour.

If they return to those areas after being moved on, they face being arrested.

It comes after police introduced three dispersal orders in the space of just two weeks in Rhymney.

Inspector Oliver Petty, of Gwent Police, said antisocial behaviour “won’t be tolerated in Gwent” and continued: “Our officers are committed to protecting our communities and will take action against anyone intent on causing harm or disorder.

“If you have any concerns about antisocial behaviour, and see us on our patrols, please do stop to talk to us.

“Alternatively, you can report your concerns by calling 101, or by sending us a direct message via Facebook or Twitter.”

Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge described the dispersal order as a “short-term fix”.

He said: “I don’t believe these short-term fixes work as we have had a number in Blackwood.

“I would therefore welcome the views of the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner on this subject as I am sure my residents would welcome a long-term solution.”
