Nearly 1,400 families in Caerphilly County Borough have been referred to the council’s housing support team over the last five months, due to the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.
Of these families, 327 were in the private rented sector and facing homelessness due to rising costs.
In total, around 2,700 referrals were made to the service over the last five months – a 33% increase compared to the same period in 2022, the council’s cabinet member for housing, Cllr Shayne Cook, has revealed.
Cllr Cook also confirmed more than 900 fuel vouchers, worth £44,000, had been handed out over the winter months.

“The cost-of-living crisis is having a real impact on Caerphilly residents.” said Cllr Cook. “Household budgets are continually being squeezed with increases in everyday costs such as food and fuel leading to people struggling to manage their finances and pay their mortgages or rent.”
Cllr Cook added: “It’s important our residents know that Caerphilly Council’s housing support team are here to help and support you whether you’re a homeowner, contract holder (council, housing association or private), sleeping rough, or sofa surfing.”
Referrals can be made through the council’s website or by texting HOUSUPPORT to 81400.
What is the council’s housing support team?
The housing support team can provide residents with housing advice or assistance, and can help those at risk of homelessness.
It can also help tenants find the best value utilities and help set up direct debit accounts with energy suppliers, as well as registering people with health services.
The housing team also works with tenants to help prevent evictions and claim benefits, and can also assist with grant applications.
Advice on budgeting, managing money and debt management is also available from the housing support team.
Anyone in need of housing advice or assistance, or at risk of homelessness, can contact the council on 01443 8736552.
