Paul Munday received a sentence of two years and nine months

A Blackwood man has been jailed for two years and nine months after injuring three people in a crash on Christmas day while under the influence of alcohol.

Paul Munday, 52, was involved in a collision on Sunday December 25 2022 which injured three people in another car.

Mr Munday was driving a Mini Cooper that was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa in the B4251 Yard Coal Rise in Oakdale.

Mr Munday appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on September 15 and pled guilty to four driving offences.

He was handed a sentence of two years and nine months and will be disqualified from driving for four years and four months.

PC Michelle Greatrex, the officer in the case, said: “Munday was driving while under the influence of alcohol and in excess of the speed limit. He misjudged a significant right-hand bend and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

“It is only by chance, rather than judgment on the defendant’s part, that a more serious outcome did not occur.

“The driver of the car and its passengers, which included a three-year-old child, not only suffered life-changing injuries but now continue to live with the trauma of the collision.

“The victims are appreciative of the defendant showing remorse for his actions and admitting his guilt.

“While they accept that they did not intend to go that day to cause harm, they would like to be given privacy as they continue to process what happened to them.

“I’d like to thank the victims in this case for their support of this investigation and the witnesses who came forward to support our actions in order to bring this case before the court.

“I want to remind everyone who gets behind the wheel – there are no excuses for driving after consuming alcohol or taking drugs so think before you drive.”
