An all-age school in Rhymney has received what its headteacher has described as a “glowing” report following an inspection in May this year.
Idris Davies School was inspected by Estyn and received positive feedback about its inclusive and supportive learning environment, accessible curriculum and care of vulnerable pupils.
The all-age school, which has 897 pupils, received the report which states: “Idris Davies School is a highly inclusive, supportive and caring learning environment where staff know their pupils well.
“Leaders and staff make a considerable effort to ensure that pupils make progress in their learning and in their personal development during their time at school. This is reflected in the school’s vision of giving ‘every pupil – every opportunity – every day’.
The report added that the school’s “support and care for vulnerable pupils, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, is exemplary”.
Richard Owen, headteacher of Idris Davies School 3-18, said: “As a school community we are incredibly proud of this glowing Estyn inspection report and the fact that it clearly recognises the significant areas of strength evident across the school.
“As a school, we are acutely aware of the significant challenges faced by our pupils and their families, especially in the current economic climate and the cost-of-living crisis.”
There were four recommendations for the school, which included improving attendance and strengthening planning for the development of pupils’ literacy.
St Gwladys and Upper Rhymney Primary School both recently received positive feedback from Estyn.
