Blackwood’s Royal British Legion (RBL) is calling for new members after the branch recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Branch secretary Natasha Hocking spoke to Caerphilly Observer about some of the work the RBL in Blackwood have been doing: “We think of ourselves as a community organisation who like to get out and speak to people when we can.
“We’ve organised a lot of fundraising events in recent months. We were a big part of Blackwood Beach Party and raised £150 in one day with only a few volunteers.
“Our Poppy Appeal last year raised a record-breaking £28,000 in Blackwood alone over two weeks which was amazing.”
Despite the branch’s best efforts, they’ve seen a steady decline in numbers over the years, and is asking people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved.
“Obviously we support the Armed Forces and their families, but we want to let people know that anyone can join as a volunteer,” said Natasha.
“It would be great to see some younger people get involved too so that our future as a club is guaranteed. We’ve been writing to schools and councillors and hope to get some interest soon.”
The Blackwood branch doesn’t have its own clubhouse, but the group meets at Blackwood Golf Club on the second Thursday of each month.
When asked what events the RBL has coming up, Ms Hocking said: “Remembrance Sunday isn’t too far away and last years was fantastic when organised by Town Mayor George Edwards.
“We’re hoping for an equally good turnout at the Cenotaph in Blackwood this year. It will be a good chance to tell people some of the work we do.”
