A memorial service will be held at the Welsh National Mining Memorial and Garden to mark the 110th anniversary of the Senghenydd Mining Disaster.

On October 14, 1913, 439 miners were killed after an explosion tore through Universal Colliery in Senghenydd.

This was, and remains, the largest mining disaster in British history.

The service will also mark the 1901 mining disaster at the same colliery, where 81 people died.

A post on Aber Valley Heritage Group’s website reads: “You are welcome to join us on Friday October 13 at 10am at Welsh National Universal Mining Memorial Garden, Senghenydd.

“Floral tributes may be laid.”
