Fields of Magnetic Horizon at Jones Arcade, Pierhead Buildings, Ystrad Mynach

Ystrad Mynach will have a new record shop this weekend – and readers of Caerphilly Observer can win a £25 voucher for the independent retailer.

Fields of Magnetic Horizon opens its doors on Saturday December 2 at Jones Arcade, Pierhead Buildings.

According to the man behind the new venture, former music executive Jonathan Richards, this will be the first record shop to grace the town in decades.

Born in Ystrad in the 1960s, Jonathan embarked on a on a “wonderful” full-time career in the music industry – working for a number of record labels as a label and publishing manager around London during the 2000s.

Jon Richards is looking forward to welcoming customers at Fields of Magnetic Attraction

Jon returned to his hometown with his family ten years ago and continued to work freelance in the industry. But he also branched out to become a record dealer, helping to organise and attend a number of record fairs across south and West Wales.

The name of the new shop connects with Jon’s former music career.

Fields of Magnetic Horizon was the title of a two-CD Proto-Metal compilation that Jon was product managing for a record label during the mid-2000s.

When the album’s release was postponed, Jon was still keen to use the name he conjured for “something worthwhile and exciting” and kept it for his new venture.

He joked: “The name has eventually found its rightful place at last.”

Jon is very much looking forward to serving the music loving public in the area, and will stock a wide range of mainly second-hand vinyl LPs and CDs to begin with, but within a short space of time, will also start to acquire brand new releases from various music distributors.

He added: “We very much hope the record shop will take-off and begin its mission into the expanding universe and bring the love of music to many people over the years to come.”
