A Tir y Berth-based packaging firm has been handed a £300,000 boost from the Welsh Government.

Chevler Ltd, which makes packaging for the bakery, butchery and hospitality industries, is planning to use the funding to replace an ageing asbestos roof.

The company hopes this will allow it to reduce heating costs and carbon emissions, as well as improving working conditions for staff.

The money comes from the Welsh Government’s Economy Futures Fund and is made up of a £150,000 non-repayable grant, as well as a £150,000 loan.

Chevler managing director Stuart Whelan said: “This vital support from the Welsh Government helps us build a platform from which we can secure and continue the expansion of our manufacturing operations, enabling us to increase our highly skilled workforce.

“It also gives a new lease of life to the premises by insulating them to current regulations.

“This will dramatically help us increase our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon emissions.”

He added: “Now that this issue has been resolved, we can confidently invest in our people and processes to drive growth.”

Wales’ economy minister, Vaughan Gething, said the support will allow Chevler to “safeguard jobs and look ahead to the future”.

He continued: “Following heavy losses during the pandemic, the company has made a commendable recovery and has plans to increase sales and employ a further ten people once its building is fit for purpose.”

Caerphilly’s Labour Senedd Member, Hefin David, said: “This is brilliant news. Not only for Chevler – who are an important presence and manufacturing provider in the Caerphilly Borough, but for Welsh Government, who have granted this funding as part of their economic contract to provide public investment that prioritises the social and environmental needs of Wales.”

Dr David added: “This agreement will provide security for a growing, local employer whose work provides a service that other businesses rely on to trade.”
