Kayley Price, who lives in Risca, won her debut ultra marathon over the weekend, where she ran 43.5 miles from Brecon to Cardiff.

Originally from Blackwood, Kayley had only run as far as 26 miles until Sunday February 4, before she embarked on one of the toughest runs in Wales across 43.5 miles and over 2,000ft of elevation.

Kayley told Caerphilly Observer she had “no expectations” before setting-off in Brecon, down the Taff Trail to the finish line in Nantgarw: “I didn’t really know what to expect when I set off. I’d only ran marathons before and they’re completely different.

“It was tough physically of course, but mentally too. For large parts of the course I was on my own running through the woods.

“My family went above and beyond to meet me at the halfway stage and at the end of course.”

Kayley ended-up winning the women’s race with an official time of six hours and 16 minutes.

The 28-year-old continued: “It was actually a little quicker than that because they add 25 minutes on for the break you have to take.

“I had six-and-a-half-hours in my head as a rough guess before the race. So I’m pleased.

“It was a great feeling to get over the line and see everyone. The training over the last few years was worth it in the end.”

Asked if she has any plans to tackle another ultra, Kayley said she has the small task of completing the London Marathon in April first, but might sign-up to one after that.
