Trethomas chippy Ship Deck has been crowned the best in the Britain at the UK-wide National Fish and Chip Awards.
The awards, hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, were held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel in London on Wednesday February 28.
The chip shop, on Newport Road, was opened in 2019 by partners Ryan and Kimberly Hughes.
In a post on Facebook following their win, the owners said: “Dreams do come true.
“We are so proud to be fetching the trophy home to Caerphilly, it’s only the second time it’s ever been to Wales.

“We would like to say huge thanks to our team – you guys make Shipdeck what it is. We are only human and we don’t always get things right, but we always try our damn best to, and will continue to do so.
“A massive thank you also goes out to our families for the support they give us in life, our suppliers for the quality produce and last but by all means not least you – our fantastic customers. Without you guys we would never be living the dream.”
It was the second consecutive year the business has been named among the finalists at the annual awards.
Caerphilly MP Wayne David gave his congratulations on the award and said: “I’m truly delighted that the Ship Deck has had this award. It’s really deserved. I often get the family’s fish and chips from the Ship Deck and they are always excellent.”
Ship Deck was also named among the finalists in this year’s ‘Field to Frier’ category, which considers everything potato – including; where they’ve come from, how they fry, and most importantly, how they taste.

Award winners have been invited to visit Norway in July with event sponsors Seafood From Norway – where they will get an insight into the country’s fishing industry and learn more about sustainable practices.
Last year, Maesycwmmer chippy Fish Kitchen 1854 was crowned best in Wales – and second best in the UK – at the awards.
