Children from Hendredenny Park Primary have been busy planting trees as part of a community council’s effort to improve the local environment.
A total of 47 trees were planted in the field next to the Angel pub near the Hendredenny estate, Caerphilly.
The trees have been paid-for by Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn Community Council.
Chair Emma Llewellyn said: “The school has an eco council which has been running for many years. We decided to do this with them to improve the local area. We’ve also got some other projects lined up for Penyrheol and Energlyn.”
Alongside the tree planting, the community council also honoured a local resident to thank him for his tireless community work.
Paul Jones was presented with a community council award recognising his efforts to improve the area through regular litter picks and volunteering.
Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about his award, Paul said: “I’m really chuffed. I wasn’t expecting it.”
He continued: “I retired several years ago, and when picking the kids up from school, I’d notice how much litter there was.
“I’ve been doing litter picks for several years now, usually on a Tuesday if it’s dry.
“Every time I pass litter, I want to sort it out. I can’t just leave it – someone’s got to pick it up, and the council workers can’t be everywhere.
“There’s lot of others who do the same.”
Paul added: “There’s lots of positives and it gets me out and about.”
