School inspectors from Estyn have praised Newbridge School for its “caring and supportive community” where “most pupils feel safe and free from bullying or harassment”.

Based on an inspection in January this year, a report from the school watchdog said staff are making secure progress” against the high expectations of the school’s motto: ‘Inspire, Succeed, Excel’.

Pupils at the secondary school were also found to “behave well in lessons and around the site and are proud ambassadors of their school”.

The school’s provision for pupils with additional learning needs was highlighted as a particular strength. The report noted that “many pupils, including those with additional learning needs (ALN), make at least suitable progress in their knowledge, understanding and skills, and a few make strong progress”.

The report said headteacher Andrew Thompson provided “assured leadership and has a clear and ambitious vision for the school” and is well-supported by other senior leaders.

It also noted: “While governors are experienced and enthusiastic supporters of the school, they do not challenge important aspects of the school’s work robustly enough.”

In addition to developing the governing body’s role as a critical friend of the school, Estyn also recommended improvements in the way the school evaluated its own progress.

It also wanted to see improvements in strategic planning – including development of pupils’ Welsh language skills.

Raising attendance levels at the 1,038-pupil school has also another recommendation, although this is improving.
