Rhymney residents are being encouraged to shine a light on the unsung heroes in their community through the ‘Community Stars Awards’.
The awards are run by Gerald Jones MP and Dawn Bowden MS and recognise volunteers who “help make our towns and villages what they are.”
The first award was given out in 2018 and received by Eirwen Selkirk, who ran the school crossing patrol near Abertysswg primary school for more than 40 years.
Last year, Ralph Williams, who had been the musical director of the Rhymney Valley Male Voice Choir since 1969, also received an award.
On her website, Ms Bowden wrote: “Most of us already volunteer without thinking about it. Every time you take part in a PTA or community group, you’re volunteering. Even things like shovelling snow off a shared pavement, or cutting the grass in a communal area, count as volunteering.
“Our Community Stars award allows us to thank those who go above and beyond to make life better for others. So, if you know an unsung hero who you think deserves recognition, let us know.”
Residents can make a nomination on Ms Bowden’s website.
