A community council has won an award for organising activities to “improve the wellbeing” of residents.

Darran Valley Community Council has won the ‘One Voice Wales Community Engagement Award’ from Un Llais Cymru (One Voice Wales).

The council, which covers Deri, Fochriw, Groesfaen and Pentwyn, received the award from the organisation, which acts as the voice of community and town councils across Wales.

Community council clerk, Amanda Pallister, submitted the nomination and said: “Darran Valley Community Council is constantly looking for innovative, creative ways to engage and improve the wellbeing of its community.

“With a small budget and only one part-time clerk, it is something to be commended. I am nominating the council as clerk as I’m very proud of all the councillors – they always put the local community first and want to improve their quality of life.

“I live outside the area but am proud to be part of something that has the heart of the community at its essence. I would dearly love to see them recognised for this.”

The award commended activities arranged the council, including free Christmas pantomimes, the Santa on a fire engine event and play packs sent out during the pandemic.
