Smart Money Cymru Community Bank has been nominated for Digital Business of the Year in the Wales Business Awards 2024.

The not-for-profit credit union is joined in the nominations by fellow Caerphilly-based business Nuaire, which is competing for the Workplace Wellbeing Award.

With support from Welsh Government, Smart Money Cymru has invested heavily in updating its financial technology and has staffed branches in Caerphilly, Blackwood, Tredegar, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Aberdare.

Earlier this year it announced it was merging with Newport Credit Union to form the largest organisation of its kind in Wales – offering financial services to more than 15,000 members.

Established in 1966, Nuaire provides a full range of energy-efficient domestic, commercial and renewable ventilation solutions.

Based at Caerphilly’s Western Industrial Estate and Bedwas’ Pantglas Industrial Estate, it has supplied ventilation systems for major international projects such as Kuwait International Airport and new stadia for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It was sold in 2015 for £145 million to the Doncaster-based Polypipe group.

A total of 49 companies have been named as finalists for the prestigious awards across 11 categories.

The awards are organised by Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid.

The winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony on 16 May at the Vale Hotel & Resort, with broadcaster Andrea Byrne returning as host. One finalist will also receive the ‘Wales Business of the Year’ award during the evening.

Paul Butterworth, CEO of Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid, said: “The Wales Business Awards are a showcase for the best Welsh business has to offer and we would like to congratulate our very worthy Caerphilly-based finalists who have made amazing contributions to working practices, customer relationships and the economy over the last year.

“The awards continue to be a launchpad for businesses and are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate together their achievements that make such a huge difference to the Welsh economy.”
