Former OAP centre set for ‘transformation’ after being taken over by charity

A disused former OAP community centre is set to be given a new lease of life, with The Parish Trust taking over its ownership.

Following “extensive negotiations”, the Christian-led charity has secured ownership of the disused Bryn Hall building in Trethomas.

Reverend Dean Roberts, chief executive of the trust, spoke about turning the venue into a “versatile and family-centric space”.

Rev Roberts said: “The Bryn Hall, long neglected and in disrepair, will hopefully undergo a remarkable transformation under the stewardship of The Parish Trust.

“The vision is to reimagine it as a versatile, family-centric space, designed to cater specifically to the needs of families, children, and youth while remaining accessible to all residents of Trethomas.”

Rev Roberts explained how the site, which is adjacent the trust’s current base in St Thomas’ Church, was donated by Bedwas Theatre Group following extensive negotiations going back to 2021.

The trust is still in search of a new headquarters after the Church in Wales told it they had a year to find a new home in February this year.

“The acquisition of Bryn Hall is only a part of The Parish Trust’s relocation. The charity is moving to a multi-site model of operation, with advanced negotiations taking place currently on an additional site which will hopefully become the charity’s main headquarters.”

Carrie Gealy, youth and children’s officer for the trust, said: “The Bryn Hall will be a dedicated space for families, children, and youth, providing a range of programs and activities designed to meet their unique needs and interests. 

“From educational workshops to recreational activities, we aim to create an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued and supported.”

Rev Roberts went on to say that the trust is looking to secure some grant funding, and will consult with the community before submitting an application at the end of June.
