Ahead of National Fish and Chip Day, Fish Kitchen has announced it is opening a new street food style shop at Ffos Caerffili.

‘Rite Up u’r Street’ will be the third fish and chip shop co-owners Lee and Samantha Humphries have launched, having already received national recognition for Fish Kitchen 1854 in Maesycwmmer, and Fish Kitchen 1931 in Bargoed.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer ahead of the opening, which is expected to be Thursday June 13, Lee said: “We can’t wait to be honest. An opportunity arose to look at a unit and we were really pleased with the facilities.

“We have a contract of four to six weeks but we’d obviously hope to stay here long term if all goes well.”

When asked about the new shop, Lee explained it will have a “street food vibe”, offering something different to your traditional chippy: “We like to be creative at the other shops, and we’re always looking at new ways to excite customers with our food.

“We’ve really expanded things this time and have lots of cool ideas lined-up, with crab and lobster for example, as well as offering your classic fish and chips.

“We’re always keen to show-off local product and Welsh seafood, so that’ll be at the heart of the shop.”

On how preparation is going with just one week to go, Lee said: “Its been 100mph honestly. We’re focusing on the branding side at the moment, promoting the other work we do, but there’s still a lot going on here.

“It’s a mad rush but we’re really looking forward to it.”

Despite Fish Kitchen’s success in recent years, it has been a difficult time for the industry according to Lee.

“We’ve been pretty busy and things are going well. The cost-of-living crisis is still hurting everyone and gives us challenges everyday.

“Energy costs are still really high and the price of produce is still crazy. It has improved slightly but it’s still tough.”

National Fish and Chip Day is usually on the first Friday of July. However this year it will be held on Thursday June 6 in honour of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
