Machen Cricket Club were looking to pick a win up against Miskin Manor

There were wins all round for Caerphilly sides who played in the South East Wales Cricket League on Saturday June 8.

Starting in the second division, Newbridge Town were looking to secure back-to-back wins as they opened the batting on the road to Brecon.

The visitors wouldn’t have been feeling too confident after setting a manageable 161 for Brecon to chase, but the hosts didn’t get near; all out for 103.

That win puts Newbridge seventh and just a couple of points behind those above them.

Meanwhile, it was a very different story for Blackwood Town, who came into the weekend still looking for their first win of the year.

At home against a high-flying Penarth side, an opening score of 176 looked to be difficult to defend for Blackwood.

Penarth managed the chase comfortably, six wickets in hand by the time they caught the hosts inside 39 overs.

Blackwood remain the only winless side in the division and sit bottom of the table.

It was a good Saturday for the division three sides, as Machen hosted promotion hopefuls Miskin Manor.

The visitors opened the batting with a good score of 214 for Machen to hunt down.

Machen just about got there with three wickets to spare. That impressive win moves them up into sixth, but joint on points with fourth.

Elsewhere in the division, Crumlin fancied their chances up against bottom-place Barry Athletic.

All credit to Barry however, they opened with a very healthy score of 191, leaving the visitors with a lot of work to do.

It was a very close one, but Crumlin managed to get over the line to win by two wickets inside the 44th of 45 overs.

Crumlin sit seventh just a point behind Machen.

In division four, Pontymister and Crosskeys were hoping to return to winning ways at home to Cardiff’s thirds.

The visitors opened the batting and set Pontymister a solid run total of 195.

Down on wickets, the hosts could not get close, eventually running out of overs after 148 runs. That loss means they sit in sixth.

In division seven, Abercarn were looking to build some momentum as they travelled to Whitchurch.

It was the hosts who batted first, setting a steady 168 for the visitors to catch.

Abercarn managed the chase with six wickets to spare, firing them up into third and looking good early on to be in with a promotion shout.

Finally down in division ten, it was an all-Caerphilly match-up between Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer and Pontymister and Crosskeys seconds.

Hosts Cefn Fforest were looking for their first win of the season, and made light work of Pontymister’s batting attack, scuttling the visitors out for 129 after just 24 overs.

It was a very simple chase for the hosts, who did so losing just three wickets. That much needed win puts them one from bottom.
