Community councillor Aneurin Minton is currently on day four of his challenge

Aneurin Minton, who is one of Caerphilly’s youngest community councillors at 23, is hoping to cycle 1,000 miles across the Pyrenees after losing friends to suicide.

The Plaid Cymru councillor, who represents Penyrheol, has always been a “keen outdoorsman” according to dad Robert Minton, who spoke to Caerphilly Observer: “Nye is a countryside ranger for the council based in Penallta, and he’s often outdoors doing something.

“Only a couple of months ago did he cycle from north Wales all the way down to Cardiff Bay. I’m a little bit concerned for him on this trip naturally, he’ll be camping out every night for two weeks.”

Aneurin’s journey across the Pyrenees, which straddle the border between France and Spain, began four days ago.

In the days since, Aneurin has cycled more than 200km in 32 degree heat, 4,500 feet above sea level.

All of this in hopes of raising £1,500 for suicide prevention charity, CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), an issue close to Aneurin’s heart, according to Robert.

“At just 23 he has already lost three people he knows to suicide and is hoping to raise some awareness. I’m very proud. His friends and family are rooting for him too.”

Robert admitted he will be “relieved” when the challenge is over, but has full confidence his son will make it back safely.

He added: “He’s always taking me to new secret spots across Wales. I thought I knew the country well but he has a knack for finding great places to see.”

Lindsay Whittle, Plaid Cymru leader in Caerphilly and fellow Penyrheol councillor said: “We’re all very proud of Nye’s magnificent solo efforts for an extremely worthwhile cause.

“He is a young man himself and wants to help others who are less fortunate. I’ve sponsored him myself and encourage other to do the same.”
