King Charles III to visit Senedd to mark 25 years of devolution

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit the Senedd this week to mark 25 years of devolution.

The King will address Senedd Members during a ceremony marking his visit on Thursday July 11.

First Minister Vaughan Gething, Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies, and Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth will also speak, as will Senedd speaker, or Llywydd, Elin Jones.

The visit coincides with the passing of a new law increasing the size of the Senedd and changing its voting system ahead of the 2026 Senedd election.

What is devolution?

The King and Queen will also meet with people who have contributed to the work of the Senedd over the years, including Neil Evans – a petitioner who successfully campaigned for plastic bag charges in 2007.

They will also meet members of Senedd staff who have worked there for 25 years, or are themselves 25-years-old, as well as Welsh Youth Parliament representatives.

The visit comes days after new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited the Senedd, vowing a ‘reset’ in the relationship between the Welsh and UK governments.
