Caerphilly comedian Tommy Smith is hoping to become the next big thing as he prepares for his debut performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

After impressing at last year’s Glasgow comedy festival, Tommy is Scotland-bound again in August, alongside fellow comic and friend, Gareth Morris.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer ahead of the “Olympics of comedy”, Tommy said: “I started out in comedy in 2019 and at first wasn’t sure if it was for me.

“I remember my first set almost walking off the stage it was so tough. I’ve come a long way since then.”

Since missing a year or so due to Covid, Tommy has been touring all across south Wales in preparation for bigger events, while also working as a mental health support officer.

He continued: “I feel like I’ve climbed the ladder quite quickly, and get a real kick out of hearing people laugh at my work.

“Everything is planned now in terms of material. I have five shows over three days so its just been the case of practicing now.

“My good friend Gareth Morris will also be travelling-up and performing at the festival.”

Asked if he’s considered the festival as a chance to break away into comedy full-time, Tommy said: “I’ll be honest it’s probably at the front of my mind.

“I know people from south Wales who managed to get head hunted at the Fringe and are now doing big things.”

The event will run between August 2 and August 26, with Tommy performing on August 9, 10, and 11.
