Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni’s site in Fleur de Lis

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni has received a positive report from education watchdog Estyn following an inspection earlier this year.

The Welsh-medium comprehensive school, which has campuses in Fleur de Lis and Caerphilly, has been described as a “homely and caring community” by Estyn, whose inspectors visited in May.

The report went on to say attendance at the school is above average, whilst the rate of persistent absences is “significantly lower” than the national average.

Other strengths include a “comprehensive programme of valuable interventions of personal and social education provisions to supports pupils’ educational progress and wellbeing effectively.”

When speaking about the leadership team, Estyn said there is a “strong culture of evaluation and self-criticism”, and that in most cases, teachers “foster a supportive and close working relationship with their classes”.

Pupils praised for ‘excellent’ behaviour as schools receive glowing Estyn reports

Headteacher Matthew Webb was described as leading the school with “energy and enthusiasm”, and is “passionate about ensuring the best experiences for pupils and the future of the school.”

Inspectors did note in a “small minority” of lessons teachers were talking for “too long” and ‘closed questions’ were being asked meaning pupils were not always able to “achieve the best of their ability.”

There were also concerns over the school’s budget deficit, which needs addressing according to Estyn.

The full report can be read on Estyn’s website.
