South Wales East Senedd Member Natasha Asghar has been shortlisted for a ‘woman of the year’ award.

The Asian Achievers Awards celebrates the successes of people in the UK with south Asian heritage.

Ms Asghar, who is the Welsh Conservatives’ shadow transport secretary, is one of four women nominated in her category.

Also in her category are Curzon PR CEO Farzana Baduel, women’s health specialist Dr Nighat Arif, and Leah Chowdhry, who is CEO of workspace and childcare firm Pop up Party and Play.

The awards are being held in London on September 20.

Making history

When Newport-born Ms Asghar became a Senedd Member in 2021, she made history by becoming the first woman of colour ever elected to the Senedd.

Her father, Mohammad ‘Oscar’ Asghar, was the first person of colour, and the first Muslim, elected to the Senedd back in 2007.
