Caerphilly-based firefighter Lee Prescott is set to run Cardiff Half Marathon wearing 22kg’s worth of equipment to raise money for a motor neurone disease (MND) charity.

Lee, who recently turned 50, will be completing the 13-mile run across Cardiff for the third time in his gear after first tackling the course in 2022.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer ahead of the run on Sunday October 6, Lee said: “I’ve been training for the past four months and obviously have all the equipment and gear ready to go.

“Having run this race before I realise each time I go to do it again just how heavy everything is. I will say it’s surprisingly comfy however, although you do get quite hot so lots of water is needed.”

Lee said how without the added weight he’d complete a half marathon in one hour and fifty minutes, but this time, with the extra 22kg, it will be closer to three hours.

He continued: “The biggest problem I had last time was a squeaking noise coming from my helmet. It was like running with a mouse.

“I’m hoping to beat my best time of two hours and forty six minutes, but just getting around will be an achievement.

“It’s such a brilliant race, it’s true what they say about the crowd getting you around it. They really do cheer you home.”

Lee also ran the Caerphilly 10k in full gear along with fellow firefighter Tony Howarth in 2022.

Having raised thousands for MND in the past, Lee has already raised £2,000 ahead of the run, for what he described as “very worthwhile cause”. He added: “A family friend’s son back in Bristol where I used to live was diagnosed before he turned 40.

“I’ve seen first-hand how devastating a disease it is, made worse by the fact there is no cure yet.

“The people I’ve met since being involved in the charity is the true journey I’ve been on. Hearing their stories of bravery are incredible and truly inspiring.”
