A new law that would stop anyone currently under the age of 15 from ever buying tobacco has been laid before the UK parliament.
The law, which would affect anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, is aimed at creating a ‘smoke-free generation’ – and would cover all four UK nations.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was part of Labour’s election manifesto in the summer, will be debated by MPs.
A similar bill was tabled by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak earlier this year, before plans were eventually shelved due to the general election being called.
It has been supported by the Welsh Government, with mental health and wellbeing minister Sarah Murphy voicing her support.
“This is a huge step forward in ensuring the health of future generations and we will work closely with our partners to ensure the bill is rolled out as smoothly as possible,” Ms Murphy said.
“These proposals will help us meet our commitment to create the first smoke-free generation and to tackle the growing issue of youth vaping.”

She added: “Increasing the age at which people can buy tobacco products, as well as preventing vapes being deliberately targeted towards children, will play a big role in achieving this.
“Together we can ensure future generations ‘stub it out’ for good.”
The bill would, if backed, give enforcement powers to agencies like Trading Standards Wales to issue fixed penalty notices for the illegal sale of tobacco and vapes, and other nicotine products.
Jacqui Thomas, chair of Trading Standards Wales, welcomed the bill and said: “The proposed changes will be key in the protection of public health, particularly for children and future generations.”
The bill would also introduce measures to tackle the rise in children and young people vaping, with almost 16% of young people in Year 11 vaping at least once a week.
Proposals include restrictions to the advertising of vaping and nicotine products, a ban on vape vending machines, and measures to reduce the appeal and availability of vapes.
Dr Keir Lewis, respiratory clinical lead at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, said: “This bill provides a chance for people in Wales to achieve better health. As a lung doctor, I see the pain, misery and death caused by smoking every day.
“The government is helping protect us now and for generations to come with such a comprehensive set of measures to control tobacco and vaping.”
