Spades are in the ground as 82 ‘eco homes’ are set to be built on the former site of Oakdale Comprehensive School.
The development has been described as ‘groundbreaking’ by Caerphilly County Borough Council, with energy efficiency a priority in the build. 44 homes are also set to be classed as affordable housing.
Residents have criticised the plans, citing the size of the development, road safety, and antisocial behaviour as concerns.
However, plans passed in October 2023, and construction company Willmott Dixon has begun the build, which is part-funded by the Welsh Government.
It’s expected that the work will be completed by Spring 2026.
Sean Morgan, leader of the council, said: “Last year we made a commitment as a council to build 1,000 affordable low carbon homes over the next ten years.
“As well as providing high-quality homes that are affordable to run, our vision for Oakdale Place is to create a sustainable community where people choose to live.
“We’re also committed to ensuring the significant investment being made delivers much wider benefits and leaves a legacy for local communities.”
Cllr Shayne Cook, cabinet member for housing, added: “As the national housing crisis continues, there is a struggle to build homes quickly enough to meet demand. We recognise that we need to think differently as a council and find innovative ways to provide homes for those that need them.
“Oakdale Place is an excellent example of this, by taking an unused brownfield site and transforming it into a community of energy efficient homes that, as well as helping meet increasing demand for social housing, will also offer opportunities for first time buyers get onto the property ladder through low-cost home ownership, in addition to open market sales.”
A council spokesperson said a ‘revised application’ for a further ten properties will be submitted soon, potentially bringing the total figure up to 92 homes.
