There were league and cup games on Saturday December 14

With Storm Darragh postponing fixtures across Wales last weekend, rugby clubs returned to action on Saturday December 14, eager to make up for lost time.

But while some teams returned to their respective leagues over the weekend, many others were battling to reach the next round of their respective cup competitions.

League round-up

Cross Keys made a winning return to Pandy Park, beating Narberth 30-24 to move up to seventh in the WRU Premiership.

The Keys climb above Newbridge, who drop to eighth after a 33-7 loss at home to Merthyr.

Bargoed, who didn’t play on the weekend, drop to ninth.

Down in the National Championship East, Ynysddu move up to seventh after beating Brynmawr 13-6 at home, while third-place Penallta keep up the pace with the top two following a big 47-15 win at home to Cambrian Welfare.

Meanwhile, there was a local derby in Division 1 East, with Senghenydd getting the better of Nelson 19-14 at the Welfare Ground.

The result sees the Saints climb above Nelson into fourth.

Dropping down all the way to League 4 East, Bedwellty rise to third after a big 57-0 derby win over Pontllanfraith, who fall to ninth, one place above bottom.

Over in Division 5 East, Deri remain strong in the title race after a 36-0 win at Hollybush, keeping them two points behind leaders Tredegar Ironsides.

Finally, in Division 6 East Central, Bargoed Athletic won 26-7 on the road against Bridgend Athletic.

Cup round-up

Bedwas are into the WRU Championship Cup semi-finals, after seeing off Talywain 27-13 away from home.

Meanwhile, Caerphilly have advanced in the Division 2 Cup following a 23-16 win at Brynaman.

However, a narrow 20-18 home defeat to Porthcawl saw Blackwood knocked out of the competition.

Risca have also been eliminated, having suffered a heavy 63-5 loss away to Llantwit Fardre.

Over in the Division 3 Cup, Rhymney beat Chepstow 34-11 on the road to sail into the next round.

But there was no such joy in the Division 5 Cup, where Blackwood Stars‘ cup journey came to an end following a 26-23 loss at St Peters Athletic.

Penallta Athletic also exited the competition following a 24-13 loss away to Brecon Athletic.
