According to the NHS, social isolation has a negative effect on mental health and can worsen conditions such as anxiety and depression. There is also evidence to suggest an impact on physical health and even increased mortality rates.

Despite living in a modern world that is increasingly centred online, in-person connections are invaluable to humans – the pandemic was a harsh reminder of that fact.

Social enterprise RecRock has helped hundreds of people connect with one another over the years through the love of music.

The community-based organisation was started more than a decade ago by Daniel Fitzgerald and runs regular workshop sessions across Caerphilly County Borough.

Dan explained: “While music is the focus of the project, the sessions act as a way to socialise and aid people to combat social isolation and improve their mental wellbeing.

“We can work with any adult, and also run projects for young people during the school holidays. If you are a beginner, talented musician or just want to come and have a singalong, everyone is welcome.

“RecRock is a great way for people to get together and perform. It is amazing how all the groups can come together to put on a public event or a smaller event, or just for the fun of getting together and sharing their skills.

“Members are encouraged to write and record their own songs, which can be performed as a group in our events put on in the community.”

Over the past 12 months, RecRock has put on some fantastic performances at different events and venues. These include Caerphilly Pride, Caerphilly Cheese, and Bargoed Music Festival.

RecRock has also recently started a digital skills group which puts out a monthly newsletter from its volunteers showcasing its work and latest events.

Belinda Griffett is a regular participant of RecRock’s workshops.

She said: “RecRock has a lot to offer. It does not matter what background you have come from as RecRock is a diverse and friendly environment.

“You do not just become a member, you become part of the RecRock family. Whether you just want to sit in the background and strum a guitar, or be in the spotlight, there is a place for everyone and it is a great way to build up your confidence whatever your age.”

RecRock sessions currently running

Caerphilly Miners Centre –  Mondays: 10.30am to 12.30pm.
White Rose Resource Centre – Tuesdays: 10am to noon; and 1pm to 3pm.
Digital skills at Bargoed Library – Thursdays: 10am to noon.
Rhymney Day Centre – Fridays: 10am to noon.
