A series of litter-picking sessions have been confirmed by Caerphilly Council, following a plea to residents to help tackle the “blight on our countryside”.

Last week, Councillor Chris Morgan, cabinet member for waste, revealed the council spends more than £85,000 each year clearing litter from dual carriageways.

Cllr Morgan said: “We spend a significant amount of money and resources clearing litter from our strategic highway network. 

“I would urge local people to do their bit to help make our county borough a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit.”

Following that plea, the council has confirmed it will litter-pick along the A469 between Caerphilly and Ystrad Mynach on Wednesday March 5.

Following that, a clean-up will take place along the A467, between Aberbeeg and Crumlin traffic lights a week later on March 12.

A litter-pick will be carried out along the A472 between Maesycwmmer and Newbridge on March 19, before council workers will clear up around the A462 between Full Moon roundabout and Rogerstone Morrisons.

The council said it takes time and money to safely clear busy roads and verges, meaning they only arrange clean-ups a few times a year.

Cllr Morgan added: “It can be challenging and costly to carry out this work, particularly when our budgets are under such pressure. This money can be better spent on delivering other key services, rather than clearing up the mess left by an inconsiderate minority.”
