A 50-year-old Caerphilly man has appeared in court charged with the rape and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.

Karl Drummond, of Van Road, appeared before Newport Magistrates on Thursday March 6 and was remanded in custody following his arrest on Sunday March 2.

He is facing two charges of rape, a charge of attempted rape, and another charge of sexual assualt.

No plea was entered during the preliminary hearing, and Drummond is due to appear at crown court next month.

Speaking before the hearing, Detective Superintendent Michelle Chaplin, senior investigating officer with Gwent Police said: “We understand the concern and anger that reports of this nature can have within our communities.

“With the support and information from the victim, our officers were able to identify the location of the reported offences and arrest a 50-year-old man from the area on the same day of the offence.”
