The club’s roof has been “patched-up” over the years, but is in need of major repair

Machen Rugby Club is desperately trying to raise money for a new roof, having faced increased costs since the pandemic.

Machen RFC recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, with the clubhouse on Commercial Road welcoming more than 150 players across multiple year groups.

The future of the building is at risk however, with a failing roof described as “potentially unsafe” by the club, who had planned to fix it before the pandemic – but since have been hit with rising costs.

During that time however, the club has been busy. Not only celebrating 150 years, but by hosting NHS, MP, and councillor surgeries, as well as acting as a warm hub and co-working space for the people of Machen and beyond.

One of Wales’ oldest rugby clubs is celebrating its 150th anniversary

Hoping to raise £22,000, the club says it will spend the money on replacing tiles, inspecting timber, and removing and replacing any flat roofs.
