Two British tourists who drowned off the coast of Australia have been named as 46-year-old Robin Reed and his 17-year-old son, Owen.

The pair, from Caerphilly County Borough, were swimming at a beach in Seventeen Seventy, Queensland, when they were swept out to sea on Sunday April 13.

Emergency services responded at around 2.15pm local time, with a police rescue helicopter deployed. However, they were both declared dead at the scene.

Paying tribute on Facebook, Treowen Stars Football Club posted: “Awful, awful news about Robin Reed and his son Owen.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences with Robin and Owen’s family and friends.

“Robin was a good friend to many at Treowen and will be missed.

“Rest in peace both.”

Their deaths have been reported to the Coroners Court of Queensland, which told the BBC: “As the coronial investigations into the deaths are in initial stages, no further information can be released at this time.”
