Blackwood community hub Libanus Lifestyle is inviting residents to a ‘Community Engagement Day’ to discuss plans for a transformative 12-month pilot project on its grounds.

Based at the former Libanus Chapel, which was built in 1829 and is one of the oldest buildings in Blackwood, the not-for-profit centre is run by a small group of volunteers and offers a variety of classes and events.

Work converting the former chapel began in 2015, with the building modernised and its churchyard converted into a vibrant garden.

Staff and volunteers now want to breathe new life into the centre’s outdoor space.

Over the next year, they hope to develop a multi-use garden showcasing horticultural skills – ranging from vegetable and fruit growing to beekeeping for honey production. Future phases include the installation of a poly tunnel and the establishment of a “kitchen garden” to support farm-to-fork cooking lessons.

Partnerships at the heart

Organisers want to work closely with nearby Libanus Primary School to create a garden that children can use to help their learning through wildlife observations, planting activities, and arts and crafts.

In addition, the project will explore the region’s heritage – particularly the Chartist movement – through art, video storytelling, and animation, tapping into community knowledge.

Adult education also features prominently in the plan. Libanus Lifestyle is exploring how the garden and building can offer new opportunities, and will prioritise workshops in gardening skills.

Karen James, from Libanus Lifestyle, said: “Special efforts will be made to engage lonely and isolated community members, offering a welcoming environment and positive activities to foster social connections.

“We want to establish Libanus Lifestyle as a local anchor organisation and hub for community activity and to reduce social exclusion with our events.”

Call to Action

On the ‘Community Engagement Day’, residents and potential partners will have the chance to discuss the proposed project with Libanus Lifestyle staff.

Feedback will inform next steps to maximise community involvement.

All are welcome this Friday, April 25, between 11am and 2pm at Libanus Lifestyle, on Libanus Road, Blackwood.
