The allotments recently welcomed people who’ve helped over the years

It’s been a busy spring at Van Ward Allotments, who’ve recently come together to thank those who have helped them grow their membership and land several awards.

Chair Tracey Davies told Caerphilly Observer how things are going well at the allotments, where solar panels are now up and running, as well as a new hot water system.

She continued: “Everything’s working well at the moment which is good to see. We had a recent celebration thanking some of the many people involved who’ve helped through arranging grants or just voluntary efforts.

“The warm hub feels like it’s of real use now. We have some members who are homeless so that space is more than just relief from the weather, it’s a place for them to have a hot drink and a meal.”

As well as being a budding allotments with more than 100 members, Van Ward Allotments has been busy outside of its patch on Castle Park, Caerphilly.

Tracey explained: “We’ve been doing our wellbeing adventure walks for around a year now and they’ve been great to get out exploring.

“We’ve recently become the only group in Caerphilly to achieve the three star outdoor discover award, which is run by Caerphilly Adventure.

The walking group members range from 60 to 89 years old so I’m extremely proud of everyone involved, and thankful to Multiply who’ve funded the walks.”

Some of the female members recently took part in making their own Easter bonnets

In November last year, the allotments were recognised for promoting gender inclusion, with there being an almost 50/50 gender split at the site.

Tracey explained how Van Ward has a separate plot just down the road from the main plot, and are looking to unveil a compost toilet there soon.
