A series of “purposeful and high quality” holiday lodges at a fishing attraction has won retrospective planning permission.

Cardiff Angling Centre has set up 16 timber-clad lodges and decks around the fishing ponds at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Caerphilly County Borough Council was asked to give a seal of approval to the development of the accommodation, which documents show was installed at the site between 2020 and 2024.

According to planning agents Davies and Co, the lodges are classed as caravans and not as permanent buildings.

They described Cefn Mably Lakes as a “well-established tourism asset that has successfully reused and regenerated former quarrying land into a well landscaped area”.

“The provision of holiday accommodation is a natural evolution for a successful tourism asset of this type in such a location,” the agents argued.

The application received one objection, which raised concerns access to a bridleway could be affected by the development.

The planning agents contended the lodges would have “no impact on any adjoining public rights of way”, however.

Council planning officers agreed, noting the development was at least 70 metres from the bridleway, and “as such it is not considered to have a detrimental impact”.

They also viewed the lodges’ design as “visually compliant” with their location, and of a “reasonable” size.

The application also drew the support of Draethen, Waterloo and Rudry Community Council, which said: “We believe this development will continue to thrive and benefit our community, by driving economic growth as a local employer and enhancing the area’s economic vitality.”

Retrospective planning permission was granted, subject to conditions.
