The Green Lady in Caerphilly

The Green Lady pub in Caerphilly is set to welcome television personality Paddy McGuinness after being crowned the UK’s ‘smartest pub’.

Marston’s Big Pub Quiz welcomed locals into over 200 pubs across the UK on Friday May 2, with the Green Lady coming out on top and winning £1,000 for Pontllanfraith-based charity Disability Can Do.

Disability Can Do, which supports people who have a disability, impairment, or long-term health issue, will be presented with the money in June.

Take Me Out presenter and Phoenix Nights star McGuinness, said: “I’m so excited to be working with Marston’s to find the smartest pub in the UK, and support some amazing community causes while we’re at it.

“I’m very much looking forward to meeting the winners and community projects to congratulate them in person.”

Matthew Gassor, general manager at the Green Lady, said: “We were delighted to see so many of our locals join us for the first quiz last Friday. We knew they were a brainy bunch, but we never expected to be crowned the first smartest pub in the UK.

“We’re going to be donating our grant to Disability Can Do, a fantastic local cause that’s close to all of our hearts here at the Green Lady.”
