Caerphilly’s Member of Parliament has said he is “honoured” after being appointed as a Commonwealth War Graves commissioner.

Labour’s Chris Evans, was appointed to the board of commissioners by King Charles III at a ceremony in Maidenhead on May 13.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) cares for war graves at 23,000 locations across 150 countries and territories, commemorating the Commonwealth soldiers who died during the two world wars.

It also maintains commonwealth war memorials and records.

After accepting the role, Mr Evans said: “It is vital that we always remember and commemorate the many men and women across the commonwealth, and across Wales, who sadly died during the first and second world wars.

“Future generations need to know and recognise the sacrifices that were made for the many freedoms we enjoy today. I look forward to supporting the global work of the CWGC over the coming years to the very best of my abilities.”

Commissioners, who oversee the work of the CWGC, are appointed for a three-year term, with the option of a further three years.

Mr Evans has been the MP for Caerphilly since July, having previously served the former Islwyn constituency between 2010 and 2024. He will continue to serve as an MP alongside this new role.
