A new ‘sports hub’ in Pontllanfraith, which is set to replace the adjacent 3G pitch and leisure facilities, is on track to open this summer.
The £14million development is based around a new Centre for Vulnerable Learners, and will consist of a four-court multi-purpose sports hall, changing facilities, and a small 3G pitch for community use outside of school hours.
The centre and sports pitch are being built on the former site of Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School.
Cllr Chris Morgan, cabinet member for leisure, said: “It was great to visit the site and see first-hand how this fantastic new facility will look.
“We have made significant investment in new sport and leisure facilities over recent years – including the new Y Cwmpawd site – with more planned for the future.
“This is helping to deliver modern, fit for purpose sports facilities across the whole county borough in line with our agreed Sport and Active Recreation Strategy.”
Leader of the council, Sean Morgan, added: “It’s very exciting to be here today to see the progress and visit the sports facility.
“It’s a fantastic sports hall for badminton, five-a-side football, and even has a climbing wall in it. It’s a very exciting time.”
The council added that the existing 3G pitch next to Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre will close once the new smaller 3G pitch at the ‘Y Cwmpawd’ opens in the summer.
