A 32-year-old man from Caerphilly has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary following a five-hour manhunt.

Gwent Police received multiple reports of a man carrying a weapon in Caerphilly town centre yesterday (Monday June 16).

They were first called to Pontygwindy Road, where there were reports of a man carrying a hammer at around 3.30pm.

The force said it believes the same man then walked through the town centre before taking a knife from a takeaway shop in Lansbury Park and discarding his hammer.

Assisted by police helicopters, armed officers then searched the area, where the 32-year-old man was eventually found on Gwaun Newydd, Porset Park.

Officers then reportedly “negotiated” with the man to “secure his safety”, as roads around the area were closed as a precaution.

Caerphilly Observer understands the man was on a roof as officers tried to talk him down.

It’s also understood there were reports of damage to property and vehicles, while some people suffered minor injuries.

The man was eventually arrested at around 8.30pm and remains in police custody.
