The school celebrated at a recent awards ceremony

Five pupils from Bryn Awel Primary School in Rhymney have landed top prize at a national engineering competition, which saw more than 70,000 entries from across the UK.

The Primary Engineer Leaders Award saw children come up with new ideas and present them to leading industry judges.

Of the pupils in Rhymney, five landed the ‘Highly Commended’ award for their impressive designs, while four inventors were named as winners, receiving a trophy at a celebration even at the University of South Wales.

In reception, achieving ‘winner’ status; Navara, aged five, won with her colour changing watch strap.

Regan, also aged five, won with his ‘Be Brave Buddy’, and in Year 1, Dylan, age six, won with his medic bot.

Last but not least, Laia, aged six, won with her multi tool hair styler.

Several pupils were recognised for their ideas

Keegan, Ayda, and Rowen were also awarded the ‘Highly Commended’ category by the judges.

Catherine Davies, headteacher at Bryn Awel Primary School, said: “I am so proud of our youngest learners and their achievements, and I am so appreciative of the opportunity provided by Anna, the class teacher, and her super team.

“This incredible success in engineering has shown them that their ideas matter, and I hope it inspires them to believe they can achieve anything they put their minds to.”

Anna Jones, teacher at the school, said: “They are the inventors of the future, and I can’t wait to see where their creativity takes them next.

“With engineering clearly thriving at the school, it’s safe to say that the next generation of innovators are already hard at work in Rhymney.”
