An explosion at a scrapyard in Cwmcarn has been described as a “false alarm”.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to GLJ Recycling Ltd, on Chapel Farm Industrial Estate, at around 12pm on Monday July 14.

In a statement, the fire service said: “Crews from New Inn responded to a call at approximately 12.03pm to reports of a small explosion at GLJ Recycling Ltd, Cwmcarn.

“This was a false alarm. A small explosion was caused by a camping gas bottle being crushed.”

The spokesperson said the incident had been fully dealt with around 20 minutes later.

The call came after a large fire on the site, which broke out on Saturday July 12 and took more than 24 hours to extinguish.
