A Food Warehouse supermarket could open in Caerphilly, creating 25 jobs.
The company has applied for planning permission to take over the site of the former Carpetright store, in the town’s Gallagher Retail Park.
Part of the Iceland Foods group, Food Warehouse sells the same product range as its parent company but also offers customers bulk-buy and “convenience” options.
According to documents submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council, the redevelopment would “improve customer choice within the town” and be a “qualitatively different offer to the traditional high street stores”.
A retail statement, by Lambert Smith Hampton, argues there is a “clear” need for the store, and would “help offset the recent loss of another specialist frozen food retailer” – referring to Heron Foods closing in the town centre a few months ago.
The retail statement adds the proposed new Food Warehouse would operate “in addition to the current outlet” Iceland runs on the town’s Cardiff Road, where it has “recently renewed its lease”.
In a supporting statement, town planners Depol claimed a new Food Warehouse would “not adversely impact on the vitality and viability of Caerphilly town centre”, and would instead draw “primarily” on trade from other out-of-town stores.
The proposed store would “result in the delivery of 25 good-quality jobs in a range of roles” and “make use of an otherwise vacant unit in a retail location”, they added.
The council’s planning department is currently considering a series of related applications for the project – including for approval to vary the types of goods which can be sold at the unit.
That application can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 25/0397/NCC.
